Located on the banks of Vembanad Lake in the beautiful state of Kerala, Kumarakom is the most famous bird sanctuary of South India. It is truly a heaven for the bird watching and is one of the most popular tourist spots of Kerala. It is the most attractive sanctuary of this state. Here one can watch a wide variety of birds. Some famous habitants of this reserve are waterfowl, cuckoo, owls, egrets, heron water ducks, larks and wood beetle. Among the migratory birds the Siberian Cranes attract thousands of travelers from all across the globe. The best time to visit Kumarakom is in the months of June-August.

Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuary
It is situated just 33 km south of Tirunelveli in the Nanguneri Taluka in Tamil Nadu. This sanctuary is a host for almost 10,000 migratory birds who come here from different parts of the world. Kunthakulam is a small and a peaceful town of this state. The picturesque view of this place enchants every traveler. This whole town is covered with lush green dense forests and small ponds which serve as a means of survival for the birds. Every year in the month of January-April several birds come to this reserve. On a bird watching tour here, one can spot doves, babblers, quails, kingfishers, spot-bill ducks and many more.

Ranganathittu Bird SanctuaryRanganathittu Bird Sanctuary
Located about 20 km from Mysore it is a popular tourist spot of Karnataka. Although it is one of the smallest sanctuaries of India it comprises six islets of the River Kaveri. These islets attracts several local and migratory birds. Here one can watch stock-billed kingfisher, Indian shag, painted stock, blackhead ibis and many more in their natural habitat. Along with birds, flying fox, bonnet macaque and Indian Grey mongoose can also be seen here.

Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary
It is located at a distance of 50 km from the Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the most popular bird sanctuaries of India and is easily accessible from the other states of India. It is the largest natural habitat for the pelicans in the whole of southeast Asia. It is a natural habitat for several migratory and local birds. Here one can watch spotted belied pelican, spoon bill, white ibis, night heron, open billed stork, painted stork and little cormorant. It is also a home to jackals, slender loris, monitor lizards, snakes and tortoise. The best time to visit this bird sanctuary is in the months of October and March.
